simon and duncan check out milton vineyard vines in gisborne, new zealand

March 2007 Road Trip (click photo to see pics)

Just returned from a quick visit to Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay to check on how the 2007 vintage is shaping up & I think they have a winner. Dropped in on Millton Vineyards in the middle of harvest & James Millton could not contain his excitement – stunning end of season weather had produced exceptional fruit. Got the up close & personal vineyard tour from my mate Simon (used to work @ London Street & now a vineyard rat @ Millton) & we will all be in for some magnificent wines I believe...

Then we moved on to Hawke’s Bay & a similar scenario seems to be taking place there – take a look @ that fruit in the photos!

Stopped in to chat & visit with a few of our favorite vineyards (Matariki, Unison & Trinity Hill) and wangled a wee bit of time with Jenny Dobson the superlative wine maker @ Te Awa. She was kind enough to let us sample the 2006 Syrah, Pinotage & Merlot as well the week old baby Chardonnays & Savignon Blancs – yum.

And to cap the trip off – we had a beautifully cooked 5 course meal by Malcolm Redmond (Church Road Winery Restaurant) paired with some classic cellar wines – 1990 Chave Hermitage, 1990 Chateau Beaucastel Hommage a Jacques Perrin, 1996 J. Prum Riesling, 1982 La Mission Haut Brion, 1990 Chateau Rayas, Bollinger & Pol Roger Champagne – and we all survived!

See some photos in the gallery.

Cheers!

Duncan

London Street is a wine bar and restaurant in Lyttelton, New Zealand. It has a huge wine list, built up over the years by its founder, Duncan Wilcox. Duncan also helped set up the Lyttelton Farmers Market and much of its fresh produce is used in the restaurant. The menu is small, but comprehensive and aims to use the best ingredients, in season. Local ingredients, global flavours is the idea behind the food prepared here. London Street probably has the best wine list in the South Island and it also has an extensive selection of New Zealand beers. Prices are reasonable for everything and you can buy many wines by the glass.
